Ep 7: Being Vulnerable & NOT Creating Content For Your Customers – With Rand Fishkin

On episode 7 of the Funnely Enough show, I speak to SEO legend, Rand Fishkin.

Rand is the cofounder and CEO of SparkToro.  He’s the chairman and ex CEO of moz.com He’s best known for his popular blogs and Whiteboard Friday series, as well as his book, Lost & Founder. He proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Geraldine in a TV commercial! An all round great human… 

I speak to Rand about:

  • I read an article of yours that was around not creating content for your customers – but actually for journalists, podcasters, authors etc. I found this super interesting… your reason was that they have larger audiences, can amplify it more, give you links etc. But what does that look like?
  • The majority of listeners here will be creating some sort of content. But… they might not be doing it as effectively as possible. When you’re developing a content strategy, where do you start? We’re told 1001 things… create this, create that, create for links, create for Google, don’t create for Google, write, video, audio etc. What’s the Rand Fishkin content strategy blueprint?
  • Shifting over to your book, Lost & Founder, the thing I really loved about this book was just how open and transparent you are in it. As we both know, in the marketing/business space there’s often a mentality of everything being great (which is never the case – regardless of how successful you are). Where did you get the bravery to share these lessons? Is that natural to you? Or did you have to force it out?
